Online gambling exploded in the Philippines, with betting apps and online casinos a few taps away on the same phone as your e-wallet. By some estimates, tens of millions of Filipinos have gambled online. In August 2025, the BSP ordered e-wallets to remove links to online gambling sites, and gambling transactions through them dropped sharply. But direct access still exists, and so does the risk.
Why it drains money so fast
- It's always available: 24/7, from bed, at work, in the jeep.
- Small bets feel harmless, but they add up faster than you notice.
- Near-misses and occasional wins keep you playing; over time, the house always has the edge.
- 'Chasing losses' — betting more to win back what you lost — is how a small loss becomes a big debt.
- Free credits, cashback and 'VIP' rewards are designed to keep you depositing.
Warning signs
- You spend more than you planned, or hide how much you spend.
- You borrow, use bill money, or pawn things to gamble.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to stop.
- You gamble to escape stress or to win back losses.
- Family relationships or work are suffering because of it.
If two or more of these sound familiar, it's worth taking action now, not after the next big loss.
Take back control
- Delete gambling apps and block the sites on your phone.
- Remove saved cards and log out of e-wallets on gambling sites.
- Ask PAGCOR about self-exclusion, which lets you bar yourself from licensed gambling; family members can also request exclusion in some cases.
- Tell someone you trust, and let them help you check your spending for a while.
- Talk to a counselor or doctor; gambling problems are a health issue, and help is available.
Protect your family's money
Pay bills and savings first on payday, before any money is left to gamble. Keep your savings in an account that isn't linked to your everyday e-wallet, and consider giving a trusted family member visibility over big withdrawals while you rebuild.
How to do it in Iponista
- Log every bet or top-up honestly under the Fun category, even the small ones; the monthly total is often a wake-up call.
- Set a strict monthly budget for Fun, or zero while you're taking a break. Iponista warns you as you approach it.
- Check Statistics every week to see the trend going down.
- Create a savings goal for something meaningful, and move the money you would have bet into it.
Remember this
The house always wins over time. If you're chasing losses, borrowing or hiding it, block, self-exclude, tell someone and get help.
Do this today
Add up last month's gambling spending honestly. Then decide your limit, or a full break, and tell one person you trust.
